This important series of readers is designed to help young people to develop the knowledge, attitudes, self-esteem, and skills needed to manage their relationships safely and happily, and to cope better with the crisis of HIV and AIDS which is affecting all our communities today. The stories are affirming and empowering for young readers as they portray a variety of strong believable characters who are finding ways to make choices in adversity and take control of their lives. "Caribbean HIV * AIDS Readers" can be used across the curriculum: in literacy, social studies, life skills and science classes as well as in after-school or community clubs. The readers are at three levels. Within each level there is some development in reading levels and language is controlled. The issues are dealt with in a straightforward way with respect for individual and cultural values. Level 1 includes simple stories that encourage good relationships, and prepare children to protect themselves and understand how their bodies fight disease.
In Levels 2 and 3, stories about different aspects of HIV and AIDS are presented with factual information and activities for children. Factual readers provide important and interesting information. Growing up is fun, but it's a challenge too. David, Amanda and their friends provide straightforward information about what young people can expect as their bodies change, and how to cope with their changing emotions during puberty. The book is intended to answer common questions and help young people to keep themselves safe. This is especially important for a generation faced with the challenge of HIV and AIDS.
