Co-published with the Center for Advanced Studies at the University of Virginia, this volume is a study of leaders and leadership drawn from a broad spectrum of scholarship. Nineteen participants convened at the Birdwood Conference on Leadership in 1982, held by the Committee on the Comparative Study of Individual and Society. The presentations and discussions fell into three interrelated conceptual themes: leaders, heroes, and leadership.
