Bristol has some 200 surviving houses or fragments dating from the 17th century or before; a further 600 demolished buildings can be reconstructed in precise detail from estate records and topographical views, combined with data from archaeological excavation. Thus, Bristol gives us important information on the development of the urban house forms from the 11th to the early 18th centuries, filling a major gap in our knowledge of urban housing in England.
