The Borough of Maldon 1688-1800: a Golden Age, is an in-depth study of a small English borough, market and port town in a period characterised by Professor Peter Clark as a 'golden age for most of Britain's small urban communities'. It forms a continuation of the late Dr W. J. Petchey's A Prospect of Maldon 1500-1689, published in 1991, and is based on evidence from a wide range of source material in both public and private custody, including the records of Maldon Corporation (the town's governing body until 1769), civil and ecclesiastical parish records, probate records, Customs records, manorial records, title deeds, as well as newspapers and other contemporary printed sources. The book is generously illustrated with 97 plates, most in colour, and five maps.
