In her own words, Eloise Fornieles' work centres on themes of loss, intimacy and the relationship between beauty and violence". Part confessional, part surrealistic spectacle, Fornieles' installations and performances encourage audience interaction – ranging from the sharing of dark secrets and oysters in a physical representation of Renoir's 'Bar at the Folies- Bergere', to whispering in Fornieles' ear while she drifts away in drug-induced narcosis. While the word 'performance' is generally equated to 'acting', Fornieles' work strives to uncover unconscious truths about the human condition. Just as life itself is fleeting, the treasures and pleasures we give and receive from others are transient – Fornieles endeavours to retrieve these buried treasures. In her first major publication – the artist's tender, unnerving and unflinchingly personal work is compiled in 30 attractive full-colour illustrations. This publications is the first of a new series by Other Criteria focusing on emerging artists from around the world. Fornieles lives and works in London.
