The late-Victorian Scottish architect, Rowand Anderson, was a pioneer of building restoration and a key influence upon the development of Scottish architecture. This book is an account of his life and work. It describes his multiple achievements as architect, founder of the Royal Incorporation of Architects of Scotland, and creator of the Edinburgh College of Art. Arguing that Victorian design involved far more than the reproduction of historical styles, the author describes Anderson's campaign against an over-emphasis on visual and picturesque values and his promotion of an authentic national style.
