This CD-ROM aims to help students understand the most important and complex fundamentals and concepts taught in an organic chemistry course. The interactive format means feedback is required, so as to test the knowledge of the learned material. A workbook accompanies the CD-ROM. The CD-ROM is divided into six sections, or modules: in the mechanism module students can choose an interactive tutorial on one of 68 different reaction mechanisms. In the nomenclature module students choose from a list of 12 functional groups. They can practice naming structures by building annotated structures and observing changes to the compound name. The reactivity explorer module is an interactive database of organic reactants, reagents, and products that allows students to search for trends and differences in the reactivity of various compounds. The spectroscopy module contains a library of IR, NMR, and MS spectra for up to 200 compounds. Simple analysis tools are built into the spectrum display program. The multi-step synthesis module presents the student with a synthetic challenge, a set of standard starting materials, standard reagents, and reactivity information.
Finally, the supporting concepts module includes narrated presentations on fundamental topics in organic chemistry. Some of the videos included in Supporting Concepts are additionally accessible from the mechanism module.
