This is a collector's edition of David Roberts' architectural paintings produced during his Nile travels in 1838 and his later sojourn in Cairo and Alexandria in 1839. The plates show the state of each Egyptian monument in its original site before construction of the Aswan dam and the subsequent relocation of many of the monuments. The plates reproduced in this book are taken from probably the finest existing copy of "Egypt and Nubia", published between 1846 and 1849. The original commentary, by William Brockendon, is retained. This reflects not only what was known about the history of Egypt in the mid-19th century, but also the ideas held about Egypt by an English gentleman of that era. Complemented by a cameo biography of Roberts and a description of his travels, this book also includes a commentary on Egyptian heiroglyphics and a chronology of Egyptian history.
