The man with one of the best left foots in football played alongside some of the biggest characters in the game during a colourful career. Sheedy started his football life with Hereford United before being spotted by Bob Paisley's Liverpool. But he only played three competitive games for the Reds and crossed the Park to Everton, where he won two Football League titles, an FA Cup and a European Cup Winners' Cup. Sheedy was a regular fixture in Howard Kendall's all-conquering Blues team, playing alongside legends like Peter Reid, Neville Southall, Graeme Sharp and Kevin Ratcliffe. It was during an Everton game against Ipswich in 1985 that his most famous free-kick moment came. Sheedy scored with a 25-yard shot into the goalkeeper's left-hand corner, but having been forced to re-take the kick, proceeded to curl the ball into the keeper's right-hand corner. He was selected in the PFA Team of the Year in both Everton championship winning years of 1985 and 1987. Despite being born in Wales, Sheedy opted to play for the Republic of Ireland for whom he was eligible because his father was born in County Clare.
He made 46 appearances for Eire, a spell that encompassed the celebrated Jack Charlton era. Sheedy scored nine goals for his country, probably the most famous of which was a goal against England in the 1990 World Cup. He also played in all of Ireland's Euro 88 matches. After leaving Goodison in 1992, he joined Newcastle where he helped the Magpies to a Division One title and promotion to the Premier League before finishing his career at Blackpool. Sheedy went on to become assistant manager at Tranmere Rovers under fellow Republic of Ireland legend John Aldridge and later joined Everton as a member of their academy coaching staff. In July 2012, he underwent surgery after being diagnosed with bowel cancer.
