Heidi, an orphan, goes to live with her grandfather in the Swiss Alps. Later she becomes a companion to a sick girl, Clara, and goes to live with her. Although Heidi likes living at Clara's, and learns to read, she is homesick for her grandfather and longs to return to the mountains.
