Hebrew words in the Bible can be represented in more than one way, by the optional use or omission of letters such as W or Y, which may be used to indicate certain vowels. Every passage in every book contains variations of spelling: nowhere can standardization be found. This book analyses the problems, discusses the various types of words in which variant spellings occur, considers parallel passages, and suggests explanations of how the different spellings came to lie together on the same page, and even within the same verse. The results are important for the study of the development of the text of the Hebrew Bible and of the history of the Hebrew language. This book is intended for biblical scholars, scholars of Judaism and Jewish studies; philologists.
