This book explores ways in which students learn more about language, and how what they are taught relates to their experience of language outside the classroom. It argues that a system of language teaching that takes the student's experience as a starting-point may be very effective. The book considers the place of language and literature in the English curriculum, showing how an understanding of the connection between speaking and writing can enhance linguistic ability. The book shows how language-teaching is developed as the students grow older, focusing particularly on ways of establishing a continuity in teaching between 11-16 and 16+ programmes. Examples of the writing of and discussion among students are used to illustrate the arguments.
