This study explores the complex nature of the primary school headteacher's role, especially the many paradoxes which confront them on a daily basis. The authors place the job of headship firmly in the context of attitudes and values, arguing that many management orthodoxies permeating education are unhelpful or inappropriate in primary schools. The book examines the various dimensions of headship, and focuses particularly on the nature of educational leadership, and the importance of developing successful working relationships.
