The 17th century was a highly productive and varied period in the history of painting in France. This book examines the period comprehensively, seeing it on its own terms rather than as a precursor of the flowering of painting in the following two centuries. The first part of the book comprises an analysis of stylistic developments in the context of the social, intellectual and political background, and an assessment of the position of French painters with regard to their Flemish and Dutch contemporaries and to the alluring influence of Italy. Organized alphabetically, the second part consists of biographies of every artist in 17th-century France who left a work of sufficient merit to have been preserved. These are accompanied by lists of locations of the works and a guide to the literature relating to each artist.
