Dick Martin is a Civil Engineer who has worked in Nigeria, Kenya, Oman and Saudi Arabia as well as the United Kingdom. Before going overseas, he worked on Motorways, Harbours, Pipelines and he stabilised the White Cliffs of Dover. He was a TA Bomb Disposal officer. While in Nigeria, he helped start "The Worlds Strongest Man" competition. In Oman, he worked for the Oman Ministry of Defence mainly in Dhofar. In Saudi Arabia, he was the Royal Saudi Airforce civil engineer responsible for all construction works on the Al Yamamah Project, Britain's largest export contract.
In Saudi he represented The Institution of Civil Engineers.
The book highlights cultural differences and local difficulties.
