It is now widely recognised that bridges require effective maintenance and that there will be severe long term financial consequences for bridge owners if structures are not durable. Considerable efforts have been made to understand the mechanisms of deterioration and to find methods of assessing the condition of structures. Increased knowledge is feeding through to improved materials and maintenance procedures, and clients, particularly the Highways Agency, are encouraging improvements to 'design out' problems from new structures (and to improve existing bridges).
