The world is divided into the Mighty Ammonian Empire, the Holy Lollard Empire and the Cartagans. Cartago is just south of the Ammonians, but more importantly just south of the Demon Desert. The Demon Desert hosts the Demon Clan, a bunch of mostly nomadic tribesmen with incredible powers.
Thurstan and Fugara both Demon Clan members join the Cartagan military hoping to become generals. They certainly becoming generals, however things turn out differently than they had hoped.
