The focus of this book is on how organizational efficiency can be achieved in a rapidly changing economic environment. It is an analysis of three Australian service organizations - two in the private sector, and one a government department. Using company records, interviews, surveys and observation, the authors evaluate the performance, structures and management systems of the three organizations. They argue that the most successful units are those with flat structures, delegation of authority and open communication channels, accompanied by broad role definitions, training programmes, real opportunities for promotion, and remuneration systems which reward both individual and group performance. The conclusions will be valuable to managers and students of administration.
