Material pertaining to political influences on the American theatre remains largely unstudied and in need of systematic scholarly investigation. This bibliography assists and promotes research on how the theatre was used to teach, persuade, and proselytize for propagandistic and political ends. Its entries guide users to many rich but overlooked areas of investigation. It will interest serious scholars in the fields of theatre history, American literature, American studies, American history, and popular culture, sociology, and labor history. Readers are led to material and urged to initiate studies on topics ranging from plays classified as Marxist, communist, didactic, or proletarian, to plays produced by the labor colleges in the 20s and 30s. This bibliography is an important resource in the renewal of interest in indigenous American political drama.
