In response to the recently introduced European Union directives controlling the permitting and design of landfill facilities, the UK Environment Agency has established the use of two risk assessment models (LandSim and GasSim) to aid designers in assessing hydrogeological risks and developing gas management plans and so determine the necessary technical measures required.
This book covers all aspects of undertaking a risk based landfill design. It introduces the legislative framework in Europe, and in other parts of the world, governing landfills; it outlines relevant theory for hydrogeological, stability and gas risk assessments and takes the reader through the complete design process. In addition it also considers the use of risk based design for the development of appropriate landfill strategies in emerging countries.
