Breaking the Code is a systematic phonics-based intervention program designed to help older children who are exhibiting significant reading problems. This program helps delayed students acquire basic skills in reading ad writing. Upon completion of the program students will be able to participate with their on-grade level peers. If taught correctly teachers can expect grade score gains of three years or more. The program contains four major strands: Decoding instruction Vocabulary and spelling strategy instruction Comprehension skills and strategy instruction Writing skill and strategy instruction Features: Systematic, explicit phonics instruction Guided writing activities and dictation exercises Group and individual reading activities Specific strategies for working collaboratively or independently
