In the United States, black and white portraits are usually drawn with pencil, charcoal or pen, but I found ink wash, which is a traditional Chinese painting technique, is good for drawing portraits. To demonstrate this technique, I present portraits of 45 US presidents in this book, all drawn using Chinese brush ( ) and Chinese ink ( ). The ink was made by rubbing an ink stick against the ink stone. While ink wash is usually understood as ink washed on paper, in fact, I washed ink on an ink stone.
