Each book in the "Great Journeys" series tells the story of a famous journey of exploration. Although it is written in the form of a narrative, it also describes the vessels used, the route taken, the problems and hazards encountered and the strange and wonderful finds made on the trip. In 1900 an international meeting of scientists declared an "Antarctic year" to encourage expeditions to the continent. This book gives an account of the valiant attempts made by explorers to reach the South Pole, with particular emphasis on the race that developed between the Englishman Captain Robert Scott and the Norwegian Roald Amundsen. Rupert Matthews has written several books for Wayland including titles in the "Great Disasters" and "Myths and Legends" series.
