Apartheid is presented here in its historical context as the climax and consolidation of a system that had been developing for over a century before 1948. The author begins with the arrival of the first Dutch settlers and their relations with the African peoples. He follows the history of the Dutch and British at the Cape, the Great Trek, the discovery of diamonds and gold, and the making of the Union of South Africa, and discusses the effect of all these on race relations. Aparthied policies are explained and brought up to date, and a concluding chapter looks at future prospects for South Africa. The author has written several books on African history and has been an examiner of African Student for the Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate.
