Marriage underwent a profound transformation in Nineteenth-century France as the ideal of 'romantic' love became widely diffused. It has been argued that this transformation amounted to a kind of revolution - as important in the private sphere as the French Revolution was in the historical sphere. The evidence suggests, however, that the legal framework governing marriage, prevailing gender roles and the underlying power relations between the sexes all made the new ideal of love in marriage elusive. Love and Marriage in Nineteenth-Century France explores the experience of both sexes, drawing upon the work of the major novelists, who focused their attention to an unprecedented degree upon the state of contemporary marriage.
