This collection of photocopiable activity sheets is aimed at developing the comprehension of reading material. The pack provides text-related activities that will enable pupils to develop their own knowledge about language, gain understanding of the organization of discourse and become more effective users of both spoken and written language. This pack combines both grammatical and semantic features in its activities, with the material taking account of the developmental model of language acquisition and bases its organization on three theoretical premises. First, written language depends on a sound foundation of oral language, and, if certain structures have not been mastered in speech, they will certainly cause confusion in writing. Secondly, written language places different linguistic demands on children, and this material places particular attention on teaching those features of grammar and textual organizations which research has identified as causing the most difficulty for children. Thirdly, it is vital to understand the organization of discourse and text if meaning is to be extracted from language.
The material comprises 48 double-sided activity sheets which the teacher can photocopy for use with the class or with individual pupils. The activities require the children to perform a variety of semantic and grammatical operations, sometimes simultaneously and sometimes in juxtaposition. Aspects of talking, listening, reading and writing have been integrated.
