This book is a celebration of the culture and spirit of tramping in New Zealand. Heading into the hills has been a long tradition in this country, and Mark Pickering takes both a serious and humorous look at tramping from a personal perspective, covering his early experiences of the Wellington tramping club scene of the 1970s to the unique rigmarole and rituals of Christmas tramps in the Southern Alps. A Tramper's Journey is not a guide book, but is one of the few books about tramping which attempts to explain the appeal of an activity which can be strenuous, uncomfortable and often dangerous, but brings its own unique rewards as a result of the effort. It is divided into sections which look at various features of the tramping experience, such as high-country routes and back-country huts; tramping club outings and solo travel; the influence of the elements and the tracks themselves. The book is a fascinating and entertaining mix of personal anecdote, friends' stories and historical information, enlivened with hut logbook entries and illustrated with the author's own photographs.
