Matt Mullican (* 1951 in Santa Monica, California) is a multimedia artist in the broadest sense of the word. He has an enormous spectrum of expressive forms, ranging from fragile objects to massive sculptures, reliefs to drawings, and including collages, illuminated boxes, computer animation, glass objects, video, and performance.

In his works, Mullican tries to systematize a subjective worldview. For this purpose, he developed pictograms that attempt to summarize his cosmology in models. Models already play a central role in his work, always functioning as abstractions of ideas. This publication provides a concise overview of this aspect of Mullican’s work and shows his models in their very different forms, formats, and materials: in two and three dimensions, paper, glass, textiles, ceramic, wood, or video animation.
