This text looks at what we know about the content and effectiveness of programmes designed to help underrepresented students successfully make the transition from high school to college. Patricia Gandara investigates the obstacles that keep these students from going to college. She describes the programmes that attempt to improve the situation for these kids, and, in narrative terms, Gandara presents the research on whether - and how - these programmes are effective. The heart of the book is based on the lives and experiences of one cohort of kids going through such a programme - The Puente Program in California. She shows that the real challenges facing these students often lie outside the normal considerations of their schools.
