This collection of essays brings together the fruits of two decades of research undertaken by Australian and overseas archaeologists, decades which have witnessed a dramatic expansion in our knowledge of the human settlement of this continent. The main theme is the exploration and explanation of variability in Greater Australia, (which includes today's Papua New Guinea and Tasmania), when both were linked by a land bridge to the mainland. Rather than tracing movement from simple early forms of life to later diversity and complexity, the research presented here suggests changing forms of diversity and complexity from the start. The regions studied are: Pleistocene Tasmania; Holocene Tasmania; western Victoria and southeastern South Australia; the Murray; the southern uplands of Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT; the Queensland rainforests; the Bismarck Archipelago; the Papua New Guinea highlands; and the south Papuan coast.
