In 1957, Australian literary censorship was a matter for the Customs Department. The then United States ambassador gave a gift of what he considered the finest samples of American literature to Academic libraries throughout Australia's capital, Canberra. One of these, JD Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, was banned by the Department without then due process of submission to the Censorship Board. Under pressure, Minister for Customs Senator Denham Henty submitted the book to the Board, who promptly repealed the ban. Henty subsequently announced that all cases of "literary pretension" must be referred to the Censorship Board. Henty recommended the Board go through the current list of banned publications and recommend releases.
