By applying quantitative and comparative methods Professor Teichova has produced a full account of the changes in structure and the economic problems of the six small and medium-sized central and southeastern European states between the wars. All of these states (Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Bulgaria and Yugoslavia) were striving to achieve economic growth and maintain national independence in an atmosphere of Great Powers struggling for dominance in the region. They all failed, and this is a clear explanation of the economic basis of the political disaster that overtook the region in 1938/9.
