Patai's Chemistry of Functional Groups takes the successful, long-standing and highly regarded book series "The Chemistry of Functional Groups", founded by the late Saul Patai in 1964, fully into the online environment. At launch, in December 2009, the content of all 21 volumes published since 1996, comprising approximately 27,000 pages of critical content, will be available as part of the e-MRW. New content, initially comprising two volumes per year - will be added to the e-MRW on the Wiley online platform. Chapters may publish first online, and subsequently in print format, to give additional flexibility and timeliness. The online e-MRW will give the user access to all material with all the convenience associated with this format, including alphanumeric full-text searching, browse by topic and cross-referencing. In addition to the e-MRW, the older, historic Patai volumes (from 1964 to 1995) will be available as a book series backfile. The backfile contains over 100 volumes of the series, and at around 58,500 pages is of a similar size to the backfile of our leading chemistry journal, Angewandte Chemie.

Patai's Chemistry of Functional Groups is covers, in each volume, all key aspects of the chemistry - i.e. physical, analytical, synthetic, applications areas (see more details below) - of one of the important functional groups in organic chemistry. The emphasis is on the functional group treated, and on the effect which it exerts on the chemical and physical properties of the molecule, firstly in the immediate vicinity of the functional group, and secondly, on the behaviour of the molecule as a whole.

The treatment of the various functional groups is aimed primarily at a research level audience, and focuses on information that is not already readily available in other major secondary or tertiary sources, such as Chemical Reviews, Quarterly Reviews, Organic Reactions, various "Advances" and "Progress" series as well as textbooks. Patai concentrates on the most important recent developments in functional group chemistry that have not been adequately covered by reviewers or other secondary sources, so provides an ideal reference for advanced postgraduates, researchers and academics in all branches of organic chemistry. It also used by other researchers in related areas in the molecular sciences ie by biochemists and pharmaceutical and medicinal chemists.

Each volume includes detailed information on the following topics:

  • General, theoretical and computational aspects of the functional group, for example, quantum chemical treatment, structural and conformational chemistry, and thermochemistry
  • Characterization and characteristics of functional groups with chapters covering both qualitative and quantitative methods of determination, such as UV, IR, NMR, ESR, PES, RD, CD and mass spectrometry. It also covers the basicity, acidity or the complex forming ability of the group.
  • Chapters dealing with both the formation of the functional group and the reactions, transformations and rearrangements which the functional group can undergo. This can cover synthesis and reaction mechanisms as diverse as photochemistry, radiation chemistry, biochemical formation or classic synthesis and catalysis.
  • Chapters on the biological aspects of the functional group in both biochemistry and molecular biology, as well as its applications in medicinal chemistry, drug development and drug discovery.
  • Data and reviews on the important industrial applications such as polymers, materials and nano-materials (not sure what this means - why is "materials" an industrial application).
  • Special topics: Depending on the nature of each functional group treated, these special topics may include short reviews on related functional groups on which no separate volume is planned
  • IMPORTANT: All volumes published from 1964 to 1995 are published as a backfile. PATAI'S Chemistry of Functional Groups backfile is available as a separate product.
