J H Hall grew up in a family of commercial fishermen on the Chesapeake Bay, and went on to become a doctor, a writer, and an avid sport fisherman. These biographical stories cover a lifetime of experience on the water, from gillnetting stripers in the Chesapeake to fly-fishing for bonefish in Belize. They are filled with finely drawn characters and settings, all rendered with an eye for detail, a wry humour, and a spare but elegant prose. They evoke a distinct sense of place, whether set in Maine, Montana, or the Caribbean, and though all the vignettes here are connected to fishing, they are rich in humanity.
