J H Hall grew up in a family of commercial fishermen on the Chesapeake Bay, and went on to become a doctor, a writer, and an avid sport fisherman. These biographical stories cover a lifetime of experience on the water, from gillnetting stripers in the Chesapeake to fly-fishing for bonefish in Belize. They are filled with finely drawn characters and settings, all rendered with an eye for detail, a wry humour, and a spare but elegant prose. They evoke a distinct sense of place, whether set in Maine, Montana, or the Caribbean, and though all the vignettes here are connected to fishing, they are rich in humanity. You do not need to be a fisherman to appreciate them, just a lover of fine writing.
