This title is based on the hit ITV1 series "Kingdom" with Stephen Fry which has average viewing figures of 5.5m. The first stand-alone "Kingdom" book is published to coincide with the brand new Series 3 on ITV1. In "Prodigal Son", Market Shipborough is about to host the first annual NorFest Music Festival on local farmer Campbell Undercliffe's land. A full weekend of live shows, bars and - according to many of the petrified residents of the town - 'drugged-up lunatics smashing up our homes' has been planned. Peter Kingdom is besieged by townsfolk desperate for him to put a stop to the festival. Something he is unable to do as it's a perfectly legal venture and far enough away from the town to do precisely as it likes. Not everybody considers the festival a bad thing: Ted, landlord of The Startled Duck is quick to establish his presence offering local ales and snack food - which will send the portable toilet system into overload as his questionable cooking sets to work on the stomachs of festival goers. Beatrice falls head over heels for the singer with headlining act Bad Leon, a long-haired party animal who fills Peter Kingdom with dread.Simon is considering moving into music management, determined to sign up acts that may bring him a fortune down the line - if he can only figure out precisely what a manager does.
But things take a dark turn with the death of a local girl. Her body is found in the tour bus of Bad Leon, and the lead singer is the main suspect. Peter is surprised to be approached by the local vicar, desperate for him to represent the singer in the ensuing police investigation. With the revelation that the singer is the vicar's son - a fact that could harm both their reputations - Peter has a battle on his hands trying to prove the man's innocence.
