This is a study of three artists, products of different cultures, who shared striking and frightening resemblances. Each was a child of defeated fascist countries, they were prodigies and shared an obsession with compulsive and dangerous sexuality and they all died violently. The author argues that their lives and art are linked by a vital "axis", the aesthetic of sadism, which is central to modern culture. Richard Appignanesi is an art historian and novelist and he is founder, with John Berger, of Writers' and Readers' Press.
