New archaeological discovery and textual analysis of original sources leads the two authors to disinter the true King Arthur. The dates of the two known historical events in his life are established in the Dark Ages rather than the Middle Ages. A picture of Britain in the late 5th century emerges as a land reverted to tribal strife after Roman evacuation, beset by foreign invasions from the Picts, Irish and Anglo-Saxons. Arthur is discovered to have come from a tribe resettled in northern central Wales, and to have led a nationalist Christian pact of British tribes against the pagan invaders. "Arthur" is revealed to be merely a title, and climatically his true name is revealed - Owen Ddantgwyn - together with his burial place, a mound called The Berth, north-west of Shrewsbury.
