This innovative work explores the dynamics that exist between education and group relations in various societies around the world. The authors present a typology of four ways by which ethnic/cultural groups can be related within a society structural segmentation in a vertical relationship (i.e., whites/blacks in South Africa), structural commonality in a vertical relationship (whites/blacks in the U.S.), Structural segmentation in a horizontal relationship (elites/masses in India), and structural commonality in a horizontal relationship (all groups in Switzerland). Included are three or four case studies that illustrate each of the types and focus on how the relationship of the groups within a society influences educational policy and outcomes. Also presented is an informative summary of implications for educational policy in multi-cultural societies.
