This book provides an in-depth discussion of the engineering analysis and design of beams. A general presentation is given for determining reactions, using basic statics and mechanics relationships, and developing shear and moment diagrams for determinate and indeterminate beams. A detailed discussion on beam stresses is provided including bending stress, shearing stress, unsymmetrical bending, and curved beams.

Several methods would be presented to determine beam deflection including integration methods, singularity functions, superposition methods, and energy methods. Specialized deflection methods are presented for cantilever beams, mid-span deflection, and restrained beams. Topics for the solution of statically indeterminate beams are provided. The topics of beam design would focus on both steel and concrete beam design. Steel beam design topics are presented using Allowable Stress Design (ASD) and Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) methods. Some advanced topics, such as web crippling, would also be presented. Concrete beam design would follow American Concrete Institute (ACI 318-14) code and discuss methods for sizing and reinforcing rectangular and flanged concrete beams.
