By the time he was killed in September 1944, after directing a successful raid against the German towns Rheydt and Munchen-Gladbach, Guy Gibson was one of the most highly-decorated RAF officers of World War II. He achieved fame for the part he played in the smashing of the Mohne and Eder dams in Germany in 1943, for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross, but he also completed a record number of operations as both a bomber and a night-fighter pilot, and took part in the first operation of the war. Published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of his death, this biography has been written with the co-operation of Gibson's widow and surviving family. It tells his story from his birth in India in 1918 to his death in Holland 26 years later, when the victory to which he had contributed was in sight.
