Helmut Sturm’s paintings radiate powerful colours and forms, yet are simultaneously both lyrically tender and poetical. He developed his individual pictorial language in a study of Cubism and Art Informelas well as artists like Max Beckmann, Asger Jorn and Willem de Kooning. The publication pays tribute to one of the most important witnesses of abstract-expressive painting in Germany.

Helmut Sturm (1932–2008) was the initiator of the SPUR artists’group (1957–1965) and was at one time closely associated with the Situationist International movement. From 1985 he taught at theAcademy of Fine Arts in Munich as the successor to Günter Fruhtrunk.Characteristic of his painting is the free association of representational and abstractelements, the energy of disorder and the delight in chance. This multi-faceted volume shows Sturm’s impressive and diverse creative works from 1957–2007.
