The churches nowadays are frequently alleged to be betraying their mission through political involvement. These Drummond Lectures (given at Stirling University in 1989) enquire into these charges against the Church of England and her sister church, the Church of Scotland. Relations between church and state are examined and the theological basis of political involvement is analysed. The programmes of British political parties are subjected to a theological critique and a special chapter is devoted to the environment. In 1970 Hugh Montefiore became Suffragan Bishop of Kingston, and he spent nine years as Bishop of Birmingham, before his retirement in 1987. He served on the Church's Doctrine Commission, and was Chairman of its Board for Social Responsibility. He has written many books, and has been active in environmental matters; the chairmanship of Transport 2000 is one of his retirement activities. He is an Honorary Fellow of St John's College, Oxford, and an Hon. D.D. of Aberdeen and Birmingham.
