In this work, the authors draw on political science, economics, history and sociology in presenting a modern political history of Tunisia. After outlining the country's environmental and historical legacies, they examine the rise of Tunisian nationalism, the impact of Habib Bourguiba - socially, politically and economically - and his succession by Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. The opposition presented by the rise of Islamic fundamentalism amid the financial hardships engendered by structural readjustment is then analyzed. Finally, Tunisia's position in world politics is discussed, including the repercussions of the Gulf War. The book aims to provide an accessible account of modern-day Tunisia that should be of interest to a general as well as a specialized readership.
