Companion animal behaviour counselling has expanded dramatically since the 1990s. No formally recognized qualifications became available until 1994 when the University of Southampton set up a postgraduate certificate (later, diploma) in companion animal counselling, run on a modular basis and aimed at veterinarians. The popularity of the course, which attracts students from Europe, the Far East, Australia and North America, indicates the growing market for a comprehensive textbook. By concentrating on the principles which govern the behaviour of dogs and cats, this book provides the basic tools needed to solve behaviour problems.
