This textbook provides an authoritative overview of the key elements of ICM for students of coastal management and coastal professionals. The book takes a structured approach to the development and delivery of coastal policies, focusing on key areas of ICM theory and policy. The book is divided into three distinct parts; Theory, Policy and Delivery. Each section includes a short introduction, placing the contents of that part in context with respect to the entire book. Each chapter has an introduction that provides an overview, the scope of the chapter and its connections to what has gone before and future directions. Each chapter also has a conclusion that synthesizes the key elements.
Part one of the book describes the core underpinning ideas of ICM. These ideas are reasonably settled in ICM theory, but require re-interpretation in the light of new theoretical insights and the emergence of a suite of 'new' issues facing coastal areas, including climate change, community resilience and social justice. Part two evaluates the key elements of the governance framework and policy development process of ICM. Part three identifies the two main pre-requisites for the delivery of ICM: appropriate capacity and effective monitoring. Finally, the concluding chapters synthesise the key issues arising from the book. This involves horizon scanning in order to determine forthcoming challenges for ICM and the implications these have for the future prospects of ICM.
