Later on, Amy Hill Hearth expanded her feature story into book form. The book was first published by Kodansha America in New York in September 1993.
The book was an instant success and it remained on the New York Times bestseller lists for 105 weeks.
Up to this day, the book has sold more than five million copies. In the year 1995 it inspired a Broadway play.
Similarly, it was adapted into a CBS television film in the year 1999.
