Dedicated to the discussion of theoretical aspects of organic photochemistry, this book focuses on the analysis of the detailed electronic nature of the elementary photochemical reaction steps. The treatment is based on a balanced combination of very simple models and of advanced quantum chemical calculations. It provides insight into how organic photochemical reactions occur and why their products have the structures observed. The first three chapters represent a basic survey of the known elementary photophysical and photochemical processes and of the required theoretical concepts, particularly correlation diagrams of various kinds. In the next four chapters, elementary photochemical steps are organized according to the number of atoms and orbitals involved in the primary bonding changes, and according to the topology of their interaction, linear or cyclic.
