This book presents some of the latest information available about inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and applications of this instrumental technique to the analysis of a variety of materials. Written in a concise, straight-forward manner, Part 1 includes chapters on the principles of ICP-MS, the main components of an instrument, interferences, drift, the effects of the main operating parameters, calibration, and methods of sample preparation. Part 2 features detailed analytical methods for the determination of many elements and the measurement of isotope ratios by ICP-MS. Aqueous, geological, biochemical, environmental, and industrial samples are included. There are also methods for the determination of chemical forms of elements (speciation) which include information on the control of contamination in the laboratory, interferences, and the preparation of standards. For all ICP-MS methods discussed, statements of accuracy are included as demonstrated by analyses of standard reference materials and comparisons with other analytical methods. This prevents time and effort from being expended on methods that are not suitable for quantitative work.
