Dealing mainly with language, Pietro Sanguineti’s works bring to mind the flamboyant aesthetics used in logos and advertising, yet they are at the same time visual references to art history, recalling René Magritte, Andy Warhol, Joseph Kosuth, Ken Lum, and others. Words such as “LOST,” “paradise,” “EGO,” “(now),” and “beyond” are employed as visual motifs, and the interplay of their semantic contexts harbors the vibrant surfaces of the complex system of references in which the works are based. The aggressive visuality that appears here in conjunction with language furnishes the “pure” meaning of the words with a sense of difference, thus “adulterating” them in the process. These différances are deliberate: “Ceci n’est pas une pipe.”
This monograph presents the installations, videos, verbal images, and sculptures by Pietro Sanguineti (*1965 inStuttgart); essays by Oliver Zybok, Eva Huttenlauch, and others shed light on the contexts of his work.
