Barry Hills started as an apprentice jockey back in 1952. An extraordinary gamble on Frankincense in the 1968 Lincoln as a Newmarket head lad enabled him to buy a Lambourn yard. Soon he was among Britain's top ten trainers and he has stayed there ever since. Within five years he had won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe with Rheingold, also one of the closest runners-up in Derby history, and his 3,000 plus winners have included 11 Classic victories. Career highlights include winning the 2,000 Guineas with Tap On Wood and Haafhd and the 1,000 Guineas with Ghanaati. Barry won the St Leger with Moonax and the Irish Derby with Sir Harry Lewis, though his quest for an English Derby winner continues after four seconds in the race. He won five successive Jockey Club Cups with the much-loved grey Further Flight.
